FAQs - Frequently asked questions – about Green House Systems

What is Green House Systems?

Green House Systems - Advanced Radiant Heat Nano Heating Technology. The Carbon Nano Film Heating can be installed on walls, ceilings and under a wide variety of sub - floors including floor boards, laminate & timber floating floors, carpet & luxury vinyl floor coverings, concrete, ceramic tiles, and new build - suspended timber floors.

I haven’t heard about Green House Nano heating before, is it new?

We have produced GHS over a 2 years period, Green House Systems isn’t a new invention. It's used in USA, Canada, UK and other European countries where houses and floors are commonly constructed from wood, ceramic tiles, etc. Wood and laminate floors are now extremely popular in Europe and Green House Systems is fast becoming the popular way to heat them.

How can Green House Nano Folio be so thin?

At only a fraction of a millimeter (0.275mm) thick, Green House heating elements are unlike infrared electric heating films. Green House Systems comprises a thin layer of semi-conductive carbon compound screen-printed onto a polyethylene base layer and then encapsulated into a hermetic film when the surface layer of polyethylene is laminated onto it. Each black track of carbon heating element is connected to a pair of copper conductors via a pure silver joint. When a voltage is applied between the two copper conductors current flows and a Nano heating effect results.

What is the output power rating of the Green House heating elements?

Green House Nano heating elements have a rating of 200W/h and 400W/h and are suitable for walls, ceilings and under a wide variety of sub - floors including floor boards, laminate & timber floating floors, carpet & luxury vinyl floor coverings, concrete, ceramic tiles, and new build - suspended timber floors by virtue of their low surface temperature.

What voltage does the Green House heating system require?

Green House heating elements operate at normal 240V 60Hz and controlled by a Green House Thermostat.

Can Green House heating elements be used with tile, slate and stone floors?

Yes, Green House heating elements are suitable for walls, ceilings and under a wide variety of sub - floors including floor boards, laminate & timber floating floors, carpet & luxury vinyl floor coverings, concrete, ceramic tiles, and new build - suspended timber floors.

Are Green House heating elements suitable for all types of wood floors?

Green House heating elements have been fitted beneath many types of wood floors, including laminates, engineered wood and hard wood.

Even hard wood floors?

If you are intending to choose a hard wood floor, you must ensure that it has low moisture content and is suitable for use with underfloor heating. Your supplier will be able to advise you appropriately.

Can the floor be nailed / glued or does it have to be laid ‘floating’

We always recommend that you lay a floating floor with a Green House heating system, allowing for the usual expansion gaps etc. Laminate floors often have the ‘click’ system and others may have interlocking T&G features to hold the floor together. These floors are not intended to be nailed or glued either with or without underfloor heating beneath it.

If you do need or wish to nail a floor down you must take care to plan how to do this very carefully in order to leave strips of the floor free of heating element so that you can nail along it.

How safe is the Green House Nano heating system?

Green House Nano heating systems have been used for over 2 years and are well proven. All electrical elements and heating film are double insulated and they carry the CE safety mark showing that they conform to the appropriate standards.

Won’t my feet get too hot?

The surface temperature of most wood and laminate floors should not exceed about 28°C or damage could result and, the generally recommended floor temperature for an underfloor heating system with timber covered floors (parquet etc.) is 26°C to 28°C so the floor will not feel uncomfortable to walk on. We recommend that you fit a Green House thermostat which comes complete with a floor sensor to limit floor temperature to a set value. Green House thermostat comes with the floor temperature factory pre-set to 25°C but it may be changed to suit your preferences (adjustable between 0°C and

60°C).

What happens if the floor temperature sensor fails?

It is most unlikely that the floor sensor will fail. However, if it does fail the heating system will “Fail Safe” and not work – you won’t get hot feet. It is relatively simple to replace the floor sensor if the installer has used the flexible conduit that we supply for this purpose with every heating mat.

Isn’t the Green House heating system expensive to run?

No, the Green House heating system is about 30% more efficient than comparable ‘wet’ radiator systems. In a well-insulated building the running costs can be typically £3 to £4 per m² per year.

Why do I require a thermostat?

Your Green House heating system must be controlled by a thermostat which monitors the floor and / or room temperature and compares the measured temperature to the desired set-point temperature that you have set the thermostat to.

When the actual floor or room temperature is BELOW the set-point temperature the thermostat will switch the power to the electric heating system ON. Electricity will be consumed whilst the heating operates and until the set-point temperature is achieved. Then the thermostat will switch it OFF. This process of measuring temperature and switching the electricity ON and OFF is continuous to provide a warm floor or room.

Do I have to order the floor sensor separately?

No, it is supplied complete with both the fully programmable GHS Thermostat.

Which thermostat do you recommend that I fit?

We always recommend that you fit the fully programmable GHS Thermostat. An electric heating system controlled by the latest designs of fully programmable thermostats is being extremely energy efficient (if correctly programmed). The fully programmable GHS Thermostat controls the heating system by monitoring the floor and/or room temperature and comparing the actual temperature to the desired set-point temperature of the thermostat.

The GHS Thermostat also contains a computer with internal clock function that enables the electric heating system to have 60 minutes different setpoint temperatures each day.

The GHS Thermostat controls your heating system so that you can have comfortable temperatures when you are at home and energy savings during the night when you are asleep or during the day when you are out.

Isn’t the GHS Thermostat complicated to set up and use?

No, not at all. It comes factory pre-set with a suitable programmed already. No more complicated than setting your watch. The GHS Thermostat does the rest!

Who can install the Green House Nano heating system?

Anyone can install it as long as they follow the straight forward installation instruction booklet supplied. However, should get a qualified electrician to check out your work and connect the GHS thermostat to the electrical supply.

What happens if the space on the floor is not a rectangle and the Green House heating system will not fit exactly?

No problem, we supply Green House heating elements in 4 different widths (500mm, 600mm, 800mm and 1000mm) and in different lengths from 1.0 m long to 150.0 m long. Choose whatever combination of strip width and length best suits your room. You can even cut Green House heating elements to shorten them (remember to insulate the cut edges using the white discs supplied) to suit.

What happens if the floor floods?

No problem - Green House heating systems can withstand occasional flooding if a tap is left running. It must however be dried out properly before reuse again after the flood has been dealt with.

What happens if the floor is drilled?

Floors in which the Green House Nano heating film is installed Should Not Be Drilled.

How long do you guarantee the Green House Nano heating system?

Green House Nano Heating Systems are guaranteed for 10 years when installed in accordance with our installation instructions (Green House Thermostats are guaranteed for two years).
